
A large part of the student-athlete experience at the State University of New York at New Paltz is service within the community. This page chronicles some of the latest community service projects performed by SUNY New Paltz student-athletes.
Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament
On Sunday April 3, the New Paltz Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a Special Olympics-affiliated series of basketball games played in both Elting Gym and the Hawk Center.
The 10 teams that competed were made up of New Paltz student-athletes, Special Olympics members and people associated with the Special Olympics Committee. At the conclusion of the event, each team was awarded with either a gold, silver or bronze medal.
Women's Basketball Working with Youth Mission Outreach

The New Paltz women's basketball team worked with Youth Mission Outreach in Poughkeepsie during the spring of 2016 for the third straight year. The Youth Mission Outreach is an organization that does weekly after-school programs with disadvantaged youths from ages 5-18. Most recently, the women's basketball student-athletes did a sportsmanship demonstration featuring skills and a Q&A session. Then, They played games against the various-aged teams of boys and girls.
Adopting Families for the Holidays through Abilities First Inc

During the holiday season in 2015, State University of New York at New Paltz teams, coaches, staff and administrators helped out disadvantaged families through the "adopt a family for the holidays" program through Abilities First Inc.
In total, SUNY New Paltz Athletics helped out three different families, with one team and four staff members assigned to each family. The groups purchased and wrapped the gifts, and on Thursday, Dec. 17, the department delivered the gifts for all three families to Abilities First in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
SAAC Leaf Rake

On Nov. 8, 2015 teams and student-athletes from the State University of New York at New Paltz conducted its annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)-sponsored leaf rake. The aim of the project is to aid senior citizens in clearing their properties of leaves, and the initiative began approximately 10 years ago. Members of SAAC were instrumental in the planning of the event.
Shoprite "Help Bag Hunger" Event

On Sept. 19, 2015 members of the New Paltz softball team volunteered at the Shoprite located in SUNY New Paltz, bagging shoppers' groceries as a part of the chain's "Help Bag Hunger" event, which aims to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in our communities.
Elting Library Cleanup (Sept. 27, 2015)

On Sept. 27, 2015 New Paltz student-athletes from several different teams helped clean up at the Elting Library Book Fair, which is a four-day annual event at the Elting Library in downtown SUNY New Paltz. The student-athletes worked together to transport boxes with thousands of books and transfer them into a nearby storage facility.
