Senior Spotlight: Five Questions with Becca Borquist

New Paltz athletic communications intern Ava Yurchison caught up with senior Becca Borquist of the New Paltz women's volleyball team for the week six release of the 2015-16 Senior Spotlight series that will have a new senior interviewed every Monday.

Q: What brought you to New Paltz?
A: "I definitely did not expect to come to New Paltz because my home is so close. It wasn't on my radar when I first started looking at schools, but after meeting coach and seeing campus, I decided it was going to be a good fit."

Q: Can you elaborate on your earliest memory playing volleyball?
A: "I remember being taught how to approach to hit a ball in seventh grade. The girls on the varsity team at Rhinebeck would come to practice to help teach us techniques. I specifically remember being taught to say, 'left, big right, together up,' when going to hit a ball. It sounds silly, but it is what helped me become the hitter I am today."

Q: Can you tell me about your experience playing volleyball overseas?
A: "Playing in the Netherlands was a great privilege. The ladies on the team were from all over the United States, so everyone had a different style of playing. This was hard at first, but we were able to learn from each other and eventually win. We lost our first scrimmage the day we had got there—I'm not saying it was because we all had two hours of sleep, but that may have had something to do with it. Nonetheless, we had a great time and were able to explore the cities we played in. We were mostly in Amsterdam and Groningen. Groningen had a big university in it, so there was a lot to do. Amsterdam was a little overwhelming at first, but in the end, it was pretty easy to navigate. The architecture was beautiful, and being able to ride a boat down a canal instead of walking down the road was definitely a change in pace. Also, continental breakfasts over there are way better than in the U.S. The cappuccinos and croissants were the best I ever had. Winning the volleyball tournament was the best part, but seeing the cities and the people of the Netherlands was a great and overall phenomenal experience."

Q: What did it feel like to win a SUNYAC championship? Can you explain the feelings you had when it happened?
A: "It's definitely one of my happiest moments playing volleyball. I can remember thinking when the score was 22-19, 'Is this actually happening?' It felt so surreal. I remember afterward being so ecstatic and hugging everyone because we finally achieved the goal we had set at the beginning of the season."

Q: What are you going to miss the most about New Paltz?
A: "I'm definitely going to miss the friendliness and excitement of everyone who attends New Paltz. The world isn't always going to be like that, but experiencing it in New Paltz has been very rewarding."
