Baseball Drops SUNYAC Doubleheader Games to Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team needed to sweep host SUNY Oneonta in a Sunday doubleheader to earn a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs, but the host Red Dragons rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 3-2 victory and clinch the fourth and final playoff spot. The Red Dragons earned a 5-2 victory in the second game.

New Paltz concludes the 2014 at 14-22, 6-12 SUNYAC. Oneonta improves to 13-23, 8-10 SUNYAC and next plays Hamilton College on Tuesday, April 29 before beginning the conference playoffs on Friday, May 2.
 
First Game
The Hawks went with senior ace Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) in the first game, a 7-inning affair. For all but one hard-luck inning, Grann was masterful, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts. Oneonta junior Kyle Jordan trailed 2-0 after two innings, but settled down to earn his fourth victory of the season. He scattered eight hits and struck out four with two walks.
 
Oneonta freshman David Wright came up big for the Red Dragons, scoring the winning run after doubling in the bottom of the sixth, and driving in Oneonta's first run with in a single in the bottom of the third.
 
Grann was sailing along through five innings, and ran intro trouble in the bottom of the sixth. Wright doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Christoper Orlando was hit by a pitch, stole second, and both runners were brought home on a single to left field by junior Dylan Stamile.
 
The Hawks jumped out first, scoring runs in the first and second inning. To lead off the game, senior Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) single down the right field line and was brought home after junior Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) singled through the left side. New Paltz tacked on its second run the next inning, when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) brought home junior Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who led off the inning with a single to center.
 
Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a single to left field by freshman Casy Kies, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Wright.

Morse and junior Stanley DeLaCruz (Bronx, N.Y./High School of International Business and Finance) each had two hits for the Hawks.

Second Game
In the second game, Oneonta turned to its ace, junior southpaw Steven Ascher, who went 6.2 innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight.

Down 5-0 after three innings, the Hawks broke through in the top of the ninth against the Red Dragons. In his last at bat as a collegiate player, senior David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central). delievered a single that brought in two RBI.
