Valdivia Sets Single-Game Scoring Record in Women’s Lacrosse’s 19-15 Loss to Farmingdale State

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored a program-record-setting seven goals, but the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (3-5) dropped a 19-15 non-conference decision to Farmingdale State College (10-2) on Tuesday afternoon at the Turf Field. Valdivia eclipsed the former single-game mark of six, which was achieved seven times.

The two teams played evenly for the first five minutes. Valdivia opened scoring 1:03 into the contest, while the Rams responded with back-to-back goals from Kimberly Pepe and Christy Thoden. Valdivia tied the score at 2-all with a marker just eight seconds after Thoden's goal, controlling the draw and going straight to the net. Farmingdale State went on a four-goal tear to take a 6-2 lead, but senior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) and junior attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) cut the deficit back to two with consecutive markers midway through the first half. The Rams went on another four-goal surge—scoring four times in 2:04—but the Hawks netted two straight off scores from Valdivia and freshman attack player Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) to make the tally 10-6 in favor of the visitors. Farmingdale State scored two of the final three goals of the first half to claim a 12-7 halftime advantage.

While Valdivia opened a half of scoring for the second straight period, the Rams went on one of their patented four-goal sprees, receiving three markers from Carly Schneider and one goal from Thoden. With Farmingdale State holding its largest lead of the game at 16-8, New Paltz rallied to close the contest. Four different Hawks scored from 14:54 of the second half to 8:26 of the second half, and a goal by sophomore attack player Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) brought New Paltz back within five. Following a Kristen Ranaldo score, Valdivia and Tornatore each found the back of the net to draw the Hawks within four with 2:44 to play. Alyssa Handel buried an insurance goal before Valdivia spelled out the final score with 59 seconds remaining.

Farmingdale State owned a 36-21 cushion in shots, and it went 11-for-14 on clear attempts. New Paltz, which went just 10-of-22 on clear attempts, was outgained, 26-22, in ground balls. Each team finished with 18 draw controls.

Valdivia had a stellar day all around, as she also tied the single-game program record in points with nine. She added two assists on top of her seven goals. To boot, Valdivia boasted five draw controls and two caused turnovers. Tornatore scored three times, while Vitale found the back of the net twice. Tesler, sophomore midfielder Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and Healy also scored for the Hawks. Sophomore midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Tesler and Johnson chipped in with one assist each. Tornatore controlled a game-high seven draws, while sophomore defender Erin Taylor (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) posted three caused turnovers.

For Farmingdale State, nine different players scored. Schneider and Thoden led the way with four goals each, while Thoden added three assists. Thoden helped the Rams gain possession, too, as she finished with six ground balls and six draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) shouldered the loss in between the pipes, making 14 stops, while Thalia Medina's five-save effort paced Farmingdale State in the win.

New Paltz contests non-conference Ramapo College next on Thursday, April 11, at 4 p.m. in Mahwah, N.J.
