NEW PALTZ – Seniors
Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and
Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team won the top flight bracket of the 2013 New Paltz Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday on the North Tennis Courts. The tournament consisted entirely of doubles matches and was broken down into three flights with two brackets in each.
Wilson and DiPaulo went a perfect 3-0 in flight one, defeating their own teammates, junior
Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip), 8-5, in the final match to take home the title in the top flight. Munroe and Tracy finished 2-1 in flight one, falling only to their teammates in the final.
Sophomore
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Allison Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) went 2-1 and took third place in flight two of the doubles tournament. They, too, took on their own teammates, defeating senior
Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and freshman
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston), 7-4 (injury default), in the third place match. Esposito and Tierney finished 1-2 at flight two.
The other schools that participated in Saturday's tournament were SUNY Cortland, Hunter College, Mount Saint Mary College and SUNY Plattsburgh. Mount Saint Mary's No. 2 team of Emily and Jen Gregory took the flight two title after defeating Plattsburgh's No. 2 team of Stephanie Omlin and Sam Fasciano, 8-5, in the flight final.
Flight three crowned two champions, one in Bracket A and the other in Bracket B. Plattsburgh's No. 3 team of Jackie Bogdon and Emily Carlin took the Bracket A title with a 3-0 record, while Cortland's No. 4 team of Janette O'Keefe and Cait Reynar went 3-0 en route to the Bracket B championship.
The tournament marked the end of the 2012-13 season for the Hawks, and the final matches in the careers of seniors
Montana Wilson,
Kayla DiPaulo and
Alli Esposito. Wilson was named the 2012 Peter J. Cahill Award winner as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Most Valuable Player. DiPaulo was named to the 2012 All-SUNYAC First Team for No. 2 singles, while Wilson and Esposito were named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team for No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Esposito was also named to the All-SUNYAC Second Team for No. 3 doubles with Schmidt. During their tenure, the New Paltz women's team won the 2010 SUNYAC title, and Wilson won the SUNYAC No. 2 singles championship that same season.
