CANTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team (8-3) opened the spring season with a 6-3 loss to St. Lawrence University (2-1) on Friday at Newell Field House.

Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and
Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) won their first doubles match of the spring over Elizabeth Geer and Morgan McNeal, 8-2, at flight one. Junior
Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and sophomore
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) fell at No. 2 doubles to Shannon Murphy and Elkie Vandenbeemt, 8-1. At No. 3, senior
Alli Esposito (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and sophomore
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) were also unable to grab the win, dropping an 8-4 decision to Olivia Arroyo and Samantha Miller.
Wilson was defeated by Vandenbeemt, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1, while DiPaulo lost her No. 2 match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, to McNeal. Munroe suffered a tough defeat in the No. 3 match by a score of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) against Arroyo. At No. 4, Esposito beat Geer, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Schmidt fell at No. 5 to Murphy in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Freshman
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) wrapped up the singles matches at No. 6 with a victory over Miller, 6-2, 1-6, 10-5.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow, March 8, with a non-conference matchup with State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East rival SUNY Plattsburgh (8-5). The match is scheduled to begin from Canton, N.Y. at 11 a.m.
