Men's Swimming Edged By Oswego in Exciting Meet, 115-90

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – In a competitive meet where every race was tightly contested, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team fell to visiting SUNY Oswego 115-90 on Saturday afternoon at Elting Pool.

Heading into the last two races, the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay, Oswego held a narrow 88-81 lead. In the breaststroke, the Lakers took first and third, as Laker Jacob Mullett edged New Paltz freshman Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) in an exciting race, giving Oswego a 102-86 lead.

The Hawks stormed back in the 200 freestyle relay, the meet's final race, winning an exciting event 1:32.32 to 1:32.46, with exceptional performances coming from freshman Luke Zenir (Cherry Valley, N.Y./Cooperstown), sophomore Rod Taskindoust (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North), sophomore Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and senior Matt Distler (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls).

The Hawks, competing in only their second dual meet of the 2013-14 season, drop to 0-2, while the Lakers improve to 4-1. New Paltz travels to Vassar College next Saturday, Nov. 23, for a 1 p.m. meet while on the same day and time Oswego hosts The College at Brockport.

The Hawks won four of 11 races, two of those wins coming from junior Jack Spader (Larchmont, N.Y./Larchmont) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.11) and the 500 freestyle (5:04.27).

New Paltz got winning performances from Distler in the 50 freestyle (22.93) and sophomore Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston) in the 100 freestyle (50.41).

Taskindoust placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:51.43) in a close dual with Oswego's Andrew Minnick (1:51.02).
