NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team set a new standard for the program under first-year head coach
Liz Student over the course of its 2012 campaign. The team finished with a 7-10 mark, tied for the best in program history, and won its first two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contests since the program's reestablishment in 2009, going 2-6 in conference play.
The Hawks opened their season with a decisive 21-8 victory at Mount Saint Mary College. Junior attack player
Brianna Horn (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), in her first game after transferring from NCAA Division II Mercy College, tied the program's single-game records in goals (6) and points (9) in the opening day victory, earning herself SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week honors for the week ending March 11, 2012.
Though it was an up-and-down season for the Hawks, their season saw many highlights, including their first SUNYAC victory which came against SUNY Oswego on the Turf Field on April 17, 2012. After falling behind late in the game, 17-15, to the visiting Lakers, the Hawks rallied back to take the lead with 8:40 to go in the game. Up by one with 2:35 to play, the Hawks played shutdown defense to hold the Lakers off the board and pick up their first conference win. They picked up another conference win a week later, defeating SUNY Potsdam, 18-14.
Freshman midfielders
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) took the top two spots in goals scored for the Hawks, scoring 38 and 34 goals, respectively. Valdivia's 38 set a single-season program record.
Senior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y./Northport) led with 70 points, including a program-best 38 assists. She finishes her four-year career in the blue and orange with 130 goals, 86 assists and 216 points, all New Paltz records.
Junior attack player
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) eclipsed her own program record, finishing the season with 97 draw controls. She now ranks first in both career draw controls (164) and ground balls (129) and caused turnovers (70) with another year of eligibility under her belt.
Senior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y./ Sachem East) climbed up to second on the New Paltz women's lacrosse career saves list, finishing with 331.
As a team, the Hawks sat atop the conference with 24.65 ground balls per game (419 total), and finished second in the SUNYAC with 9.65 caused turnovers per game (164 total).
