NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team completed its 2012 campaign with an overall record of 14-26 and a mark of 6-12 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
The Hawks' season began at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla., where they played 12 games from March 17-22. After a 0-6 start, New Paltz recovered to win four of the final six games down in the Sunshine State to start its season 4-8. The trip included a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the No. 25 University of St. Thomas.
New Paltz returned home to play three doubleheaders, including its first SUNYAC matchup with SUNY Oneonta. The Hawks earned their first two SUNYAC wins with a sweep of Oneonta, and finished their first home stand at 4-2. They then took to the road to challenge SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh. The Hawks pushed their SUNYAC record to 4-0 after sweeping Potsdam, but had a setback at Plattsburgh, dropping both ends of the doubleheader.
The Hawks hosted a pair of SUNYAC twinbills with Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia the following weekend, but were promptly swept in both. They then split a pair of road doubleheaders at Western Connecticut State University and The Sage Colleges before continuing their conference schedule. New Paltz went 1-3 over that weekend at SUNY Geneseo and The College at Brockport. The season concluded with back-to-back doubleheaders at home against No. 11 SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oswego. The Red Dragons proved to be too much for the Hawks, but they salvaged a split with the Lakers on the final day of the regular season.
As one of the youngest teams in the SUNYAC this season with nine freshmen on the roster, the Hawks have plenty of room to grow going into next season. Freshman center fielder
Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) played all but four games for New Paltz this season, compiling a .261 batting average, 11 RBI while going a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts. Freshman right fielder
Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) was leading the Hawks in many statistical categories before an injury cut her season short. Freshman pitchers
Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and
Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) pitched almost 100 innings for the Hawks this season.
Junior shortstop
Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the Hawks in batting average (.333), hits (44), RBI (19), doubles (8), triples (3), home runs (1) and slugging percentage (.462). Newly transferred from Baruch College, junior outfielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) picked up a team-best 15 stolen bases and batted .327 (33-for-101) in her first year in the Blue and Orange. A transfer from Coastal Carolina University, junior pitcher
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) recorded a team-high 3.27 ERA over 113 1/3 innings, finishing with a 7-11 mark.
