NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After reaching the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament last season for the first time since 2001, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team was unable to make a second straight appearance in the tournament, finishing its 2012 campaign with an overall mark of 18-21 (5-13 SUNYAC).

The Hawks began their season on an eight-game road trip beginning in Salisbury, Md., where they challenged then-No. 9 ranked Salisbury University in a three-game series. The Hawks prevailed in their season opener, winning the opening game of a doubleheader, 1-0, in 11 innings. New Paltz junior pitcher Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) tossed seven innings without giving up a run and sophomore pitcher Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) threw four strong innings in relief to earn the win. The winning run was scored on junior right fielder Thomas Pinnola's (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) sacrifice fly, which scored sophomore outfielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon).

Salisbury took the next two games of the series, but the Hawks bounced back to sweep a twinbill at SUNY Purchase. New Paltz ended its road trip with an even 4-4 record after two losses at The College at Old Westbury and a decisive 24-1 victory at the College of Staten Island.

The Hawks then traveled to Fort Myers, Fla., where they participated in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic from March 16-20. They walked away with their heads held high, after completing an impressive 7-2 week in Fort Myers.

New Paltz then returned to the Empire State to begin its SUNYAC schedule, starting with a series at SUNY Plattsburgh in which the Hawks went 1-2. Following their series with the Cardinals, the Hawks returned to Loren Campbell Memorial Field for their home opener with The College at Brockport. New Paltz came out victorious in their home opener, 7-3, but the rest of the weekend was washed away by inclement weather.

After a win over Mount Saint Mary College, the Hawks hosted SUNY Oneonta in what became a wild weekend at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. The Hawks rallied for four runs in the ninth, but fell short in the Friday contest, 11-7. Saturday's doubleheader featured two games that came down to the final inning. The Hawks held a 2-0 lead in game one going into the seventh, and final, inning before Oneonta's Kevin Knack stroked a game-tying two-run homer. The Red Dragons went on to win the game after posting two runs in the top of the 11th. The Hawks pulled off a comeback of their own in the nightcap, rallying back from a 7-2 deficit late in the game. The Hawks scored four runs in the sixth to come within one. After tying the game on junior center fielder Matt Carr's (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) RBI single in the home half of the seventh, sophomore catcher David Lostaglio (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) blasted one over the right field fence for a walk-off grand slam.

After winning a home game over cross-river rival Vassar College, the Hawks went on a six-game road trip, on which they only won one game, the nightcap of a neutral-site doubleheader with The College at Brockport in Utica, N.Y.

The Hawks returned home to host SUNY Fredonia in their final home series of the season. Their offense sparked a 13-5 victory in Friday's contest, but the Hawks were swept in the Saturday pair, which was the start of a six-game losing streak to close out the season.

Chismar led the Hawks with a 1.84 ERA on the season, good for third in the SUNYAC. Chismar broke the program's career strikeout record, ending the season with a total of 211 in his first three years in the Blue and Orange. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) finished with a 6-3 record, tossing five complete games and a pair of shutouts to go along with his 2.97 ERA. Pyz picked up three saves to lead the Hawks.

Senior first baseman Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) tied for the conference lead with in home runs (4), and finished second in the SUNYAC in slugging percentage (.591) and fourth in batting average (.372), all team bests. In his first year after transferring from New York Institute of Technology, Carr picked up team-highs with 28 RBI and 22 stolen bases. Senior third baseman Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) tied Carr with a .349 average. Prescia picked up D3baseball.com Team of the Week accolades for the week ending April 29, 2012, after batting .857 (6-for-7) against No. 7 SUNY Cortland over the final weekend of the season. Senior middle infielder Paul Merola (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) extended his career assists record to 355.
